Three Fascinating Facts About Millertown
1. The Lumber Mill Legacy
Millertown was founded in 1900 by the famous Newfoundland lumber magnate Lewis Miller, who established a large sawmill and pulpwood operation on the shores of Red Indian Lake. At its peak, the mill employed over 200 men and produced millions of board feet of lumber annually, much of it shipped to St. John’s and even exported to the United States. The town’s name honours its founder, and the old mill site is now a heritage park.
2. Red Indian Lake — The Beothuk Connection
Red Indian Lake, on whose shores Millertown sits, takes its name from the Beothuk people, the Indigenous inhabitants of Newfoundland. The lake was a traditional hunting and fishing ground for the Beothuk, and archaeological sites along its shores have yielded artifacts thousands of years old. The nearby “Red Indian Lake” is also the location of the last known sighting of a Beothuk person in 1829. Today, the lake is a popular destination for canoeing, fishing, and wildlife viewing.
3. The Newfoundland Railway Spur
Millertown was once connected to the Newfoundland Railway via a 20-kilometer spur line from Millertown Junction on the main line. The railway spur, built in 1901, carried lumber, pulpwood, and supplies to and from the mill. Although the railway ceased operations in 1984, the old rail bed is now part of the Newfoundland T’Railway Provincial Park, used by ATV and snowmobile enthusiasts exploring the central interior.
