Why Native Cigarettes Are Sometimes Drier

Humectants are substances that attract and retain moisture. In commercial cigarettes, manufacturers add propylene glycol (PG) and glycerin (vegetable glycerin, VG) to the tobacco for several reasons:

• More even burn? Not necessarily. Humectants help control burn consistency. Without them, native cigarettes may be more prone to canoeing (uneven side burn), especially in low humidity.

💨 Smoke Density and Appearance

• Thinner, bluish smoke: Glycerin is what produces thick, white, billowing clouds. Without it, smoke is thinner, more transparent, and slightly bluish — which some smokers prefer as “cleaner” or “more natural.”
• Less lingering odor: The thick, sweet-smelling smoke from commercial cigarettes comes partly from glycerin. Native cigarette smoke dissipates faster and leaves less residue on walls and furniture.

• Cleaner, more direct tobacco taste: Without added sweetness from glycerin or the chemical taste of PG, the tobacco flavor is more pronounced and “honest.”
